Great tradespeople supported by excellent systems is what Hawke Paint is all about.  We’re very proud of the team we’ve developed and the quality standard we are delivering.

Hawke Paint, owned by Jeremy Hawke, was established in Canterbury in 1997.  Jeremy learnt his trade in North America and the UK before returning to set up his own business in Christchurch.  His wealth of technical knowledge is applied in a wide range of situations for the benefit of our client base.

Most of our folk are trade qualified professionals, with a collective painting experience of nearly 200 years!   Five great Foremen provide us with a solid core for future growth, four have celebrated their 10-year anniversaries with us.

Hawke Paint has been built on personal relationships with local Canterbury builders and commercial project management companies, and a no nonsense reputation based on simply doing what we say we will do.

We are active members of Master Painters NZ and are proud to be an accredited Resene Eco Decorator.  Currently less than 2% of Resene's painting contractor clients nationally have been invited to participate in this quality standard, which recognises a high standard of business systems and environmental practices.

At the end of 2014 Hawke Paint introduced our Productivity Bonus system for our team.  Together with the right trades-people, and skilled Foremen, the sharing of management information encourages a culture of consistently high output and projects that are often delivered ahead of schedule.

Our Services include the following:

  • Interiors & Exteriors
  • Airless Spraying
  • Paint Stripping – Mechanical Paint Shaving/ Dustless Sanding Systems
  • Roof Recoating/ Airless Spraying – Harness Fall Arrest Systems
  • Specialist Decorative Coatings
  • Specialist Industrial Coatings, including epoxy coatings and two pot paint systems
  • Lead Based Paint Removal, based on Master Painters best practice guidelines, and a customised in-house procedure
  • Water blasting
  • Colour Consultancy

Whether it’s plasterboard, timber, steel, aluminium, iron, concrete, brickwork, stone, glass or silicone… Hawke Paint has the technical expertise to deal with all surfaces in any situation.

Residential

With over 20 years’ service in the Christchurch and wider Canterbury residential sector, our reputation is based on trust, respect and quality outcomes.  Being tidy, courteous and sensitive to your home environment is paramount.

Competitive rates are important, and attention to detail and completing projects to exacting standards creates a lasting impression, and loyal repeat business.  Strong organisation and good communication ensures that your residential painting experience is an enjoyable one.

You may bring your own creativity and inspiration to your project, ask us to match existing paint colours, or take advantage of our free colour consultancy service.

From rigorous preparation, to sharp cutting lines, our people’s passion for their trade will create an exceptional paint finish you will love.

Commercial

Long term relationships in the commercial sector are based on a can-do attitude and an ability to meet strict deadlines.  Minimising business interruption and preservation of the workspace is crucial.  Cooperation and communication with other trades, rigorous health & safety systems, maintaining professional standards and being efficient and easy to deal with, all contribute to a successful outcome.

Above all else, hitting planned start and finish dates, successful scheduling is what brings repeat business in this sector.

Hawke Paint carries full Commercial Insurance Covers ($5M Public Liability) for accidental damage.

Interior Plastering

Interior Plastering

Achieving a high-quality plastering finish is crucial to achieving a high-quality paint finish.   While we have an in-house plastering capability for smaller jobs, we use our preferred specialist sub-contractor plasterers for substantial projects:

  • Elite Plastering
  • Kerry Loper Plastering

Strong long-term working relationships with these trusted sub-contractors provides the foundation to achieving an excellent paint finish.

Services provided include:

  • Gib-fixing
  • Interior Plastering
  • Full skim-coating up to level 5 finish
  • Fibre-fuse repairs
  • Plaster Coving
Skilled Wallpaperers

Skilled Wallpaperers

Wallpaper is experiencing a strong resurgence.  Advances in manufacturing techniques is providing a vast array of finish options.  Complex designs in patterns and prints, and even three dimensional textured finishes are now widely used.   Whether a full room, or just a feature wall, wallpaper can provide a real “wow” factor to your decorating project.

Jim Cherry, Hawke Paint’s wallpapering “guru” is recognised as one of the best in the game.  Jim is requested personally by some of Christchurch’s leading interior designers such as Trenzseater and Furnishscene.    Jim is supported by other skilled in-house wallpaper installers.

From simple lining paper to cover an imperfect wall before painting, through to top-end imported papers, Hawke Paint can be trusted to achieve a stunning outcome.

Our wallpapering expertise showcases our exacting standards, receives many strong client endorsements, often leading to enquiry for our wider painting services and helps us develop long term client relationships.

Hawke Paint can install virtually anything:

  • High-end Imported wallpapers
  • Feature Walls
  • Murals
  • Anaglypta
  • Lining Paper

Audited Quality System

Audited Quality System

Hawke Paint is proud to be an accredited Resene Eco Decorator.  Currently less than 2% of Resene’s painting contractor clients nationally have been invited to participate in this quality standard, which recognises a high standard of business systems and environmental practices.

We were rapt to achieve a perfect 215 score across 43 criteria in our recent annual audit, one of only a few companies to achieve this result nationally.

This on-site audit rates our systems and professionalism across four categories:

  1. Professional Standards
  2. Quality Control
  3. Health & Safety
  4. Environmental Standards

Of course, we are not perfect, but this result tells us that in terms of our business systems and environmental standards we are right up there with the best of the best.

And if we do make a mistake, we try to put it right, fast.

Hawke Paint is an active member of Master Painters NZ, serving on the board of Master Painters Canterbury.  We have been instrumental in setting up Paint Club, an informal monthly Master Painter meeting in Christchurch to share information among top local operators and leverage best practise.

We have also developed our own Hawke Paint Quality System, a series of site documents designed to achieve consistently professional delivery standards for our clients.

Environmental & Waste Management

Environmental & Waste Management

Hawke Paint is respectful of our working environments.

Two key commitments are embodied in our documented Waste Management System:

  1. No Hawke Paint raw clean up waste, acrylic or solvent, enters the storm water or sewer systems – at your place or at ours.
  2. 100% of Hawke Paint clean up waste is collected from our work sites, stockpiled at our depot, and then treated at a commercial treatment facility

We also proactively participate in Resene’s Paint Wise programme, returning all used Plastic Pails and Paint Tins to a Resene depot for recycling.

Regarding Lead Paint Removal we have developed a three-page procedure, drawing on Master Painter Best Practise Guidelines, to ensure that we are one of the best in terms of containment, removal, and disposal of lead paint waste.

We take a two-pronged approach to lead waste disposal:

  1. Concentrated Lead Dust – this waste is taken to a Waste Management Treatment Facility to be neutralised/ bulked up prior to disposal at the Kate Valley Landfill.  Appropriate recording, testing and tracking is undertaken at the treatment facility, to meet Christchurch Council requirements.
  2. Polythene containment waste.  Lighter, and with only small traces of lead paint waste, this material is double wrapped, and then double bagged in specialty Lead Waste standard plastic bags (min micron).   These are then taken to Eco Drop Bromley, the only Eco Drop in Christchurch that can accept Lead Waste.  Hawke Paint must adhere to strict requirements before Eco Drop can take responsibility for containment/ disposal.

Our staff work hard to maintain these environmental standards, and we feel good knowing that we are doing our bit for a better environment.

Health & Safety

Health & Safety

Hawke Paint aspires to be industry leaders in Health & Safety.

The Eco Decorator SSSP (Site Specific Safety Plan) is at the core of the H&S System we operate on sites throughout Canterbury, while also meeting our clients H&S requirements.  This SSSP software was developed for the benefit of Resene Eco Decorators.   Hawke Paint had input to the design of this software as an early adopter.   To our knowledge, this is the only SSSP software developed and customised specifically for the painting sector.

A full copy of our customised SSSP is held and maintained on site for the duration of the project.   We allocate one of our Foreman to the project at the outset, and support him to achieve a great outcome for the client.    We work with the client or main contractor to ensure that any issues unique to the site are understood and clearly communicated with our team.

We have adapted the SSSP template to ensure that it works practically on site, and launched this with our Foremen.   The four key components driven by our Foremen on site are:

  1. Pre-start Audits
  2. Inductions
  3. Toolbox Meets (full staff)
  4. Accident Register

Other key aspects of our H&S System include:

  • All staff maintain Site Safe Construction Passports
  • Other specialist training is provided in areas such as Lead Management (Master Painters), Working at Height, Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (Vertical Horizons, Christchurch), and Fall Arrest Systems (Harness Certification).
  • Set up of a central Paint Base on site, providing an orderly and organised approach to the project, containing all site materials and documentation
  • Our Waste Management System ensures that none of our clean up waste enters the storm water or sewer systems.  All clean up waste is removed to our Christchruch depot, and taken to a commercial treatment facility
  • Paintwise -  all our paint tins and plastic containers are returned to Resene facilities for recycling
  • We have invested in our own electrical test tag kit and conduct quarterly testing of all electrical equipment

Health & Safety at Hawke Paint is always about continuous improvement.

Colour Consultancy

Colour Consultancy

Most clients want to apply their own inspiration and creativity to their project.   However, as with any creative process, it always pays to seek the advice of an expert.

Hawke Paint is pleased to be able to offer our clients a free colour consultancy service for all major painting and decorating projects undertaken by Hawke Paint in Christchurch.    We can also match to existing colours and finishes.

Our colour consultancy can range from simple phone advice, to an on-site visit and development of a full colour scheme and specification.

Testimonials

“Steve Brown Builders has worked hard to develop our reputation as a high end architectural builder, with expertise in hill construction.  I have been working with Jeremy’s team for about 18 years now, and they have always contributed strongly to our reputation.  There are few in the paint sector that would have Jeremy’s expertise and experience, and he has enjoyed strong loyalty with his long serving team.  I recommend Hawke Paint without hesitation.”

Steve Brown – Steve Brown Builders

“Before I started Pace Project Management in 2001, Jeremy and I completed a number of projects together, then when I started Pace Project Management Jeremy became our 'go to’ painter of choice. Now we are 15 years down the line and Jeremy and his crew are still one of the main painter/decorators that Pace Project Management use. I would have no problem recommending Jeremy and his team for any painting/decorating job, large or small.”

Andy Christian, Director - Pace Project Management

“I commissioned Hawke Paint to paint the historic Elm Tree House for my client Merivale Medical Practice.   I found them cooperative, competent and productive tradespeople who achieved a quality outcome, which was sympathetic and in keeping with the heritage structure.  I look forward to using their team again.

Roy Hamilton, Director - Procerto

“We used Hawke Paint for a full exterior and interior repaint of our 65-year-old weatherboard home. The team were thorough and efficient, from our first meeting on site with Jeremy to tidying up the final bits and pieces at the completion of the job. The crew were available when needed, were always courteous and carried out the work to a high standard. We would happily recommend Hawke Paint to others”.

Stephen Crooks - Chaplin Crooks Architects

“The Hawke Paint team painted our walls, floors, ceilings, beneath our house, on top of our house, and our bull shaped cabinet. We were very happy with their commitment and the quality of their work; we would happily use them again”.

Dominic and Jill - Hillsborough

“Trevor Hone Builders have used Hawke Paint on two major recent projects, one an extremely high end architectural hilltop build.  Both clients were very impressed with the finish Hawke Paint achieved.  We found them to be organised, highly competent, top end painters.”

Sam Bradley - Trevor Hone Builders

“I have used Jeremy and his team as my preferred painters since the late 1990’s.  I have always appreciated Jeremy’s technical knowledge.  He has many long serving staff that are highly skilled tradesmen.   Painting and decorating is a crucial part of any project, and I am in good hands with Hawke Paint.”

John Growcott – John Growcott Builders
